Abstract

The Piranesi Prix de Rome is organized as a university competition (launched in 2003 and today at the XXII edition), and is open to students from the architectural schools around the world joining Villa Adriana to wait for a two-week workshop.

Objective

The aim of the Piranesi Prix de Rome is to train specific design skills relating to architecture for archeology and to the valorisation of archaeological contexts. Working in the complex area of Villa Adriana in Tivoli not only helps to generate awareness towards the project on a ruin, but offers the opportunity to deal with places of the past with great architectural value.

Content

The Workshop is held in the extraordinary context of the monumental residence commissioned by Emperor Adriano and built between 117 and 138 AD, close to the city of Tivoli. Villa Adriana therefore takes on the role of a large and prestigious training ground for the experimentation of the project, and for the definition of a sustainable and transmissible strategy for comparison with the "high risk" archaeological areas. Italian and foreign universities will participate in the XXII Edition of the Prize which intends to be first and foremost a place and opportunity for a cultural comparison on an international basis. The project focuses on the relationship between two of the main elements that constitute the image of Villa Adriana, Architecture and Water. The students will be invited to design a “water architecture”, that could be exhibition or spa pavilions or the arrangement and museumization of parts of the Villa and its direct surroundings aimed at generating the spectacle of water captured by architecture and archaeology.Excursions to Rome and in Tivoli to Villa d’Este and Villa Gregoriana are part of the workshop.
