Last Updated: 2026-06-03 00:14:16
Abstract
The first question that arises from this title is, of course, what is feminism and what is feminist philosophy, and the debate on these are our first seminar focus. In a second focus, systematic questions are thematic, for example what are “sex” and “gender” and how is the distinction to be made. Third, themes in feminist ethics and aesthetics, in feminist epistemology and philosophy of science.
Objective
Students will get an overview of different approaches in feminist philosophy. They will be supported in developing their skills to interpret complex texts, to identify the argumentation, to reflect critically and to put it up for discussion.
Content
The first fundamental question that arises with this title is, of course, what feminism is and what feminist philosophy can mean, and the debate on this is also our first focus. A second central line of discussion focuses on systematic philosophical questions, such as what are ‘sex’ and ‘gender’ and how can they be distinguished? Thirdly, topics in feminist ethics and political philosophy, feminist aesthetics, feminist epistemology and feminist philosophy of science will be addressed. Here, a selection will be made depending on the interests of the participants. Grades will be awarded on the basis of a short group contribution (not graded) and a written examination (graded). The tutorials allow for additional discussion of the topics covered in the lecture. Attendance at the tutorials is recommended but not compulsory.
