Seminar in Empiric Bioethics Research Methods II
Last Updated: 2026-06-03 00:14:16
Abstract
This bioethics course offers advanced training in designing and conducting observational and experimental empiric bioethics research. Building on basic skills from «Empiric Bioethics Research Methods I», it delves deeper into methodologies and their application. The seminar encourages joint presentations and discussions by students and faculty on methodological issues and their practical use.
Objective
After completing this course, students will be able to: - More deeply understand qualitative and mixed methodologies as they apply to Bioethics research. - Enhance ones familiarity and comfort with the tools to complete various research methods. - Develop plans to carry out and oversee a research project.
Content
In Seminar in Empiric Bioethics Research Methods II, we will jointly develop a syllabus on the basis of the group’s personal research interests and learning needs. This more advanced seminar will delve into specific analysis approaches or resources once the basics are established. An example would be that for students who expressed an interest in qualitative research through interviews, we might deeply learn about the different theoretical approaches that underly our conduct of qualitative research, consider analysis approaches such as grounded theory, thematic analysis, discourse analysis, content analysis and phenomenologic analysis. We might then evaluate online and digital tools to assist in qualitative coding and thematic analysis. We would also include checklists, such as the CORE-Q, to allow students to have a clear understanding of how to conduct and publish a rigorous qualitative study. We will utilize current literature and ongoing projects as examples to rigorously discuss methodologic strenghts and weaknesses. In this second methodology course, students will also consider how they would teach and mentor these methodologies to more junior trainees (for example interns in the lab, future MS or PhD students they train).
