Abstract
Rebuilding and Reusing is the Order of the Day. It's Something We Need to (Re)Learn. In this elective course, we construct using what we find. The limited availability of materials requires a creative and flexible approach to joining and connecting elements. In addition to practical examples and lectures, we aim to develop theoretical details using reused materials.
Objective
Questions regarding both construction techniques and architectural expression will be addressed. Which reused materials and elements are suitable for which purposes, and how can they be joined? What new aesthetics can be created—and how can they be communicated? The goal is to prepare the next generation of architects to work confidently and competently with reused materials. Through theoretical exercises and practical case studies, students will develop an attitude toward building with what already exists—along with an understanding of its challenges and opportunities.
Content
Phase 1: Existing practices and platforms of circular construction are analyzed and discussed in groups. For a specific construction site or context, students search for suitable components—either on digital platforms or from demolition sites—and document them in an inventory. This phase is accompanied by theoretical inputs and real-world examples. Phase 2: In experimental group exercises, construction details are developed at a scale of 1:5 or 1:10 using the collected materials. The focus lies on selecting appropriate materials for the specific site and on the methods of joining individual elements. The exercises explore how to respond to a predefined situation using limited resources. In the context of a new aesthetic, different modes of representation are also tested.
