Abstract

Magnetic forces reach the limits of human perception and require prepared instruments in order to be investigated, for example iron filings and fine steel needles. The seminar will present aspects of the history of research through texts and illustrations.

Objective

The interrelation between instrument, perception, image formation, and theory formation is reconstructed on the basis of historical scenes and compared with current research.

Content

Magnetic forces push the limits of human perception and require specially prepared means for investigation, such as iron filings and fine steel needles. The seminar presents aspects of the history of research through texts and illustrations. Positions from Thales, Plato, Gilbert’s De Magnete, Athanasius Kircher, Descartes, Swedenborg, Kant, Jean Paul, Stefan Zweig, and Marshall McLuhan will be introduced. Outlooks on Nam June Paik, Emma Kunz, and contemporary female artists are also planned.
