Content
The main goal of this seminar is to understand the statistical aspects of statistical learning theory with a focus on M-Estimation over rich models. Examples include non-parametric least squares and the new phenomenon of benign overfitting. To this end, the first part of the seminar is dedicated to some background on the concentration of measure phenomena, metric entropy, Gaussian processes, and Rademacher complexity. Next, we discuss its connection to statistics in basic models. Finally, we use these ideas to understand the optimality or sub-optimality of Empirical Risk Minimization in the fundamental task of regression, mainly in non-linear models.
