Writing for Publication in Computer Engineering
Last Updated: 2026-06-03 00:14:16
Abstract
This 7-session course is designed to support doctoral students in Computer Engineering as they develop their technical and academic writing. This course will guide students through the essentials of writing clearly, appropriately, and effectively, whether it’s for their PhD, a conference, or a publication.
Objective
Students will build practical skills for technical and academic writing and communication. By the end of the course, students will be better able to: -write reader-friendly sentences and paragraphs with a logical flow and structure -organize research-based articles more effectively and coherently -analyze computer engineering texts for common genre and structural and linguistic conventions -provide and receive constructive peer feedback on writing -orally present research using clear and concise language
Content
Throughout the course, students will turn in 3 writing assignments for feedback ideally linked to their current research projects. These may include sections of a PhD proposal, research articles, or conference papers. Each assignment receives personalized feedback from both the lecturer and peers, helping students refine their writing. The course includes 7 interactive sessions, each focusing on a key aspect of academic writing in Computer Engineering: Session 1: using published texts as models; examining reader-friendly sentences Session 2: writing strong paragraphs and creating effective flow Session 3: examining methods, results, and discussion sections; peer review session #1 Session 4: writing effective introductions and conclusions; establishing tone and stance Session 5: writing impactful abstracts; introduction to conference presentations; peer review session #2 Session 6: editing and reviewing portfolio texts; peer review session #3 Session 7: practicing conference presentations with lecturer and peer feedback All sessions feature group activities, and there are three peer review sessions encouraging collaboration, practical learning, and shared insights.
