Abstract

The Module focuses on existing, industrially built objects in need of repair or retrofitting (repair project) on which CAS participants actively work to develop repair strategies throughout the duration of the program. Case studies from the construction industry are introduced and explained during the process.

Objective

The aim is to develop a scalable interdisciplinary repair strategy for a building and its parts. Participants will be challenged to reflect on their strategies from the perspectives of sustainability, normative and legal framework as well as design and making, and adapt their projects accordingly. They learn to develop concepts and strategies for their implementation in the form of prototypes. They design new concepts, instruments and business models. Case studies from the construction industry provide contextual knowledge and enable them to evaluate the opportunities and risks of different strategies.

Content

Participants work in groups to develop strategies for sustainable maintenance and repair of the different elements and components which constitute the object. They apply and critically integrate knowledge gained from the accompanying modules to develop concepts which contribute to extending the lifespan of the repair objects, preserve existing qualities, and improve long-term repairability. Based on SIA 469, methods for the preservation of buildings are shown which can be applied to the participants' projects.
