Experimental Evolution
Last Updated: 2026-06-03 00:14:06
Abstract
Students critically engage with literature from the rapidly expanding field of experimental evolution, examining diverse evolutionary questions across model systems and methods. Through reading, presentation, and discussion, they develop analytical, evaluative, and communication skills for designing and interpreting experiments.
Objective
By the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to: 1) analyze and synthesize key contributions from the expanding field of experimental-evolution research across diverse biological systems; 2) evaluate and compare the advantages and limitations of experimental evolution for addressing evolutionary questions relative to observational, theoretical, and comparative approaches; 3) formulate effective experimental designs to test fundamental and applied research questions using experimental evolution; 4) communicate and defend scientific arguments and findings clearly and critically in oral and written forms, demonstrating active and constructive participation in scientific discussions.
Content
Experimental evolution is a powerful and increasingly prominent approach to investigating evolutionary processes. Students will read, present on and collectively discuss experimental-evolution literature covering a diverse range of topics, species and types of analysis. Contributing instructors from diverse training backgrounds will share perspectives on the course material. Students are graded based on different components (presentation, online feedback, short essay, written test)
