Abstract

Practical introduction to the foundations of scientific work, materials science, physics and chemistry in the form of practical experiments and a longer, constructive project, partly closely related to the lectures. Analytical, constructive, chemical and physical methods are tested, project work is practised and safe working in the laboratory and workshop is practiced.

Objective

Practical introduction into concepts and basic principles of Materials Science, Materials Processing and Chemistry in lab course experiments and project work. To become acquainted with important chemical and physical methods. Learn about various process techniques such as CAD drawing, 3D printing (polymer), thermoforming, CNC milling, conventional milling, gluing, screwing, etc. Gain initial experience in project management.

Content

Experiments in the fields e.g. of synthetic and analytical chemistry (DC, IR- and UV-spec., DSC, DLS, TGA, AFM), fracture mechanics, mechanical/thermal properties, particle tracking (DLS and classical microscopy), thermodynamics, corrosion, hardness of metals, electroplating,"forging, stone and wood processing", "mechanical workshop" (incl. technical drawing) and further. Project work: A five-week construction project (e.g. building a "air train" ("Schienenzeppelin") is carried out at the end of the course. Final presentation of the air train to a larger audience.

Resources

Lecture Notes

Notes with information for each experiment (aim of the experiment, theory, experimental procedure, data analysis) can be downloaded from the moodle of this course.
