Inorganic and Organic Chemistry I
Anorganische und Organische Chemie I
Last Updated: 2026-06-03 00:14:11
Abstract
Organic synthesis; purification of organic substances by recrystallization, distillation, column chromatography, and extraction; characterization of organic substances using IR spectroscopy, thin-layer chromatography, and melting point analysis; writing scientifically accurate reports.
Objective
The students are able to independently prepare, purify and characterize organic compounds, carefully document their experiments, and write scientifically accurate reports. They can describe and explain the underlying reaction mechanisms and connect them with their knowledge from lectures in organic chemistry. Students are able to navigate a synthesis laboratory and are familiar with the relevant safety aspects.
Content
Part I: Basic operations such as the isolation, purification and characterization of organic compounds: distillation, extraction, chromatography, crystallization, IR (UV/1H-NMR)-spectroscopy for the identification of the constituion of organic compounds; thin-layer chromatography; melting point analysis. Part II: Organic reactions: preparative chemistry. From simple, one-step to multistep syntheses. Both classic and modern reactions will be performed.

Electives (The Bachelor's programme in Interdisciplinary Sciences allows students to choose from any subject taught at a Bachelor's level at ETH Zurich. In consultation with the Director of Studies of Interdisciplinary Sciences, every student must establish his/her own individual study programme at the beginning of the 2nd year.
