Last Updated: 2026-06-03 00:13:58
Abstract
History of Swiss Architecture and Migration of the 20. and 21. Century
Objective
Knowledge of the history of Swiss architecture and migration of 20. and 21. century. Sensibility for historical processes and for the concepts in the realm of visual culture.
Content
This two-semester lecture provides an introduction to the history of art and architecture from around 1970 to the present day. A special focus in this spring semester is on the history of architecture and migration in Switzerland in the 20th and 21st centuries. Based on current issues in Swiss migration history and its fragmented culture of remembrance, key case studies will be presented. In a historical review, thematic connections will be examined under terms such as “amnesia,” “classism,” “production vs. reproduction factors,” “representation,” “trauma,” and “transformation.” Art and architecture are understood not only as the scene of cultural change, but also as indicators of social, economic, and political conflicts, and thus as subjects through which local and global contexts can be more clearly understood and represented.
