Advanced Structural Geology with Field Course
Last Updated: 2026-06-04 00:13:24
Abstract
To provide a theoretical grounding in advanced aspects of structural geology, as well as the practical application of structural field mapping techniques in complexly deformed areas.
Objective
To learn to map, characterize, measure and analyze complex structures and multiple phases of deformation in the field. The purpose of the course is to give you an experience akin to doing real structural geology and tectonics research while exposing you to advanced aspects of structural analysis.
Content
This course will involve a 6-day field trip (including 2 travel days) to the Cycladic Blueschist Unit on Syros Island in Greece, scheduled for the dates of ETH's Easter break. In the field you will be measuring, documenting and interpreting a wide range of structural features using dominantly digital formats. Students will be graded on documents turned in at the end of each field course section, including Google Earth (.kmz) files, written descriptions with annotated photographs or sketches, a geologic map, and field test responses. The key objectives of the course are as follows: Reinforcement of digital structural analysis tools. Recognizing and measuring structural elements, including compositional layering, foliations, lineations, cleavages, fold elements. Distinguishing deformation phases through fabric analysis. Distinguishing deformation modes and mechanisms (brittle vs. ductile, frictional vs. viscous). Recognizing rheological contrasts in the field. Recognizing basic relationships between deformation & metamorphism Synthesizing a wide range of field observations into a written report.
