P&S: Echoes in Action: Designing, Simulating, and Measuring Piezoelectric Transducers
Last Updated: 2026-06-03 00:14:20
Abstract
The category of "Laboratory Courses, Projects, Seminars" includes courses and laboratories in various formats designed to impart practical knowledge and skills. Moreover, these classes encourage independent experimentation and design, allow for explorative learning and teach the methodology of project work.
Objective
Piezoelectric materials are at the heart of many cutting-edge technologies that shape our modern world. These fascinating materials generate electrical charge in response to mechanical stress, making them indispensable in devices like sensors, actuators, and transducers. Their applications span a wide range of industries, from powering medical ultrasound devices and enabling high-speed 5G/6G communications to energy harvesting and even quantum technologies. By understanding how piezoelectrics work, we unlock new possibilities for innovation in healthcare, telecommunications, robotics, and beyond. In this course, taught in English, you’ll dive into the principles of piezoelectric materials with a strong emphasis on practical, hands-on learning. You will not only explore their theoretical foundations but also get the chance to build and measure your own devices. From designing custom ultrasound transducers to developing circuits that capture and analyze signals, you will gain proficiency in using advanced electronic measurement tools (e.g. oscilloscopes, waveform generators, vector network analyzers,…). You’ll also learn how to leverage Python for data analysis and simulation, giving you the computational skills to visualize and interpret complex behaviors of piezoelectric systems. Whether you’re interested in mastering acoustic technologies, electronic instrumentation, or simply eager to get hands-on with piezoelectric transducers, this course will provide you with very practical, transferable skills that are valuable in all areas of electrical and electronic engineering.
