Whole Building Simulation
Last Updated: 2026-06-03 00:14:30
Abstract
This course covers whole building simulation for design, operation, and retrofitting of buildings and districts. Key topics include energy performance analysis, HVAC and renewable integration, parametric studies, model calibration, and uncertainty quantification. Students will critically assess results, conduct optimizations, and use building simulation to support sustainable building practices.
Objective
After completing the course, students will be able to: • Explain the principles of energy and mass conservation as they relate to building simulation and performance analysis. • Use whole building simulation tools to support the design, operation, and retrofitting of buildings. • Simulate HVAC, renewable energy, and storage technologies at both building and district scales. • Conduct parametric studies, annual simulations, system selection, sizing, and heating/cooling load calculations, and assess summer comfort performance. • Calibrate simulation models using measured data and account for uncertainty in simulation inputs and results. • Analyze simulation outcomes through sensitivity analyses and optimization studies to identify opportunities for performance improvement. • Utilize building- and district-scale simulation approaches and address their respective challenges. • Apply simulation insights to inform sustainability-driven decision-making throughout the building lifecycle.
