Abstract
This lecture provides an introduction to classical physics with a particular focus on applications in medicine. It offers an overview of important concepts in fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, and optics. Special emphasis is placed on illustrating key phenomena through experiments and developing skills for quantitative problem-solving.
Objective
The aim of the course is to impart to the students the ability to explain and apply fundamental principles and methods of physics to problems in modern science, medicine, and engineering. An important part of this is learning how to break down complex problems and apply fundamental laws and simplifications to solve them. Special emphasis is placed on students developing an understanding of relevant quantities and orders of magnitude. The secondary goal is to provide students with an overview of important topics in physics and demonstrate their application.
Content
Fluid Mechanics (Laminar Flows, Continuity Equation, Bernoulli's Equation, Flow Resistance, Hagen-Poiseuille Law) Thermodynamics (Temperature, Heat, Work, Heat Capacity, Kinetic Gas Theory, First and Second Law of Thermodynamics, State Changes, Heat Engines, Phase Transitions, Heat Transfer) Electromagnetism (Electrostatics, Electric Current, Magnetostatics, Circuits, Induction) Geometric Optics (Image Formation, Mirrors, Lenses, Law of Reflection, Law of Refraction, Eyes, Optical Instruments)
