Abstract

This course provides doctoral students in operations and supply chain management (OSCM) in Switzerland and abroad with a fundamental introduction to key OSCM topics and research methods relevant to their doctoral research and publishing journey.

Objective

After taking this course, students will: 1. Have an overview of key OSCM empirical topics and trends 2. Be familiar with top OSCM journals 3. Understand the reviewing process in top OSCM journals 4. Be familiar with key empirical OSCM research methods 5. Understand the role of theory in empirical OSCM research 6. Match an empirical research question with suitable data collection and research methods 7. Understand which contributions selected methods can (and cannot) make

Content

The course covers a fundamental topic for scholars in Operations and Supply Chain Management (OSCM). It begins with an introduction to OSCM research, focusing on key topics, trends, and prominent journals. Students will gain an understanding of the review process in empirical OSCM journals and the role of theory in OSCM. The course also addresses data-related aspects, including matching problems, data and method alignment, survey methods, secondary data usage, and empirically informed modeling. Additionally, it provides an overview of field study methods, such as field experiments, intervention-based and design science methods, case studies, and the process of building theory from case studies.
