Abstract

The physical, in-person field design trip is central to the executive degree programme throughout all its elements. The final trip takes the participants five days from Zurich to the Lucerne mountains on a Systemic Cycles tour, where they work in groups to reflect on the content of the CAS series and prepare for their Master's thesis pitches at the ETH live event at the end of this trip.

Objective

The field design trip is the primary physical element of the hybrid MAS. It serves multiple functions and is usually planned and offered close to the beginning of the course. By meeting in person, in real life, the MAS cohort activates the bonds grown throughout their common learning journey that started one and a half years ago with CAS#1. Forming a cohesive group with interpersonal trust is of key importance for the following, mostly virtual work and Quest mentoring process. The trip is named field design trip since it is not only a field visit but a design trip, where our group becomes part of long-term relation-building processes with place, people, projects, and the inner self (=weaving). We contribute by actively asking questions, engaging in dialogues, getting dirty hands by offering some manual labour to local partners, learning from local cultures, and contributing with our cohort’s rich, diverse global experience. Participants embody holistic skillsets to relate science, engineering, design, art, embodied practices, and inner processes to complex, real-world challenges. They are empowered to navigate complexity and build inner and outer resilience. They acquire a mature and applicable understanding of regeneration, become critical systems thinkers and systemic designers, and hold the inner tools to design for regeneration. This MAS module synthesizes the three DRRS CAS’ to graduate with the master design thesis.

Content

During this fourth and last field design trip of this programme, the cohort once more physically activates the group cohesion to prepare for the final phase of intense, trustful collaboration during this trip and the following virtual mentoring time. The Systemic Cycles approach to the mountain lodge connects us with the regional context and with our inner selves. At the lodge, we will practice the Quest pitching for the public event at ETH and tune our work through peer review. We take full advantage of the stimulating physical outdoor time up in the mountains.
