Abstract

The category of "Laboratory Courses, Projects, Seminars" includes courses and laboratories in various formats designed to impart practical knowledge and skills. Moreover, these classes encourage independent experimentation and design, allow for explorative learning and teach the methodology of project work.

Objective

Modern music production is at the heart of electrical engineering as it heavily relies on electronic hardware and software. Thus, the use and exploration of modern music production technologies is a great opportunity to understand, explore, and apply many core concepts taught in EE bachelor-level courses. In this P&S you will - work with an analog modular synthesizer to gain hands-on experience in signal flow, analog signal processing, and subtractive synthesis - learn about different types of microphones, including their working principles and their applications - experiment with a Theremin (an electronic music instrument) to get an understanding of capacitive wireless sensing - study the MIDI protocol (a specific case of the widely known UART interface to connect electronic music instruments) - learn the basics of a digital audio workstation (DAW), audio editing, and sampling The participants will complete 6 in-person class/exercise session (3h per week). In addition, the students will read some introductory material; this is estimated to take an additional 1h per week. The 6 sessions will take place in the second half of the Fall semester (first session on Wed, 5. November 2025). Prerequisites: - you play a music instrument and/or have a strong interest in audio processing or music - you are motivated to prepare yourself independently in addition to the supervised 3h per week Further information: - Participants should bring their own laptop.
