Abstract

Advanced Studio will be dedicated to the major theme of ‘Risk Landscapes’, as part of a programme that will attempt to study, in different locations and using different methods, the way in which the various risks posed by nature serve as an argument for the construction of landscapes.

Objective

To achieve the necessary basis for understanding and reading the landscape as a collective construction to which we add our contribution; To know the foundational elements of the landscape (geology, topography, climate, hydrology, and ecology), which build its natural tectonics, and to have a perception of its systemic functioning and its temporal and spatial dynamics; Acquire a design method that works continuously at different scales (from the territorial scale to the detailed scale and vice-versa), continually measuring the spatial and systemic consequences of each design decision at all scales of the project; Experiment with forms of representation that support and nurture design research; Use these tools for the construction of landscape architecture. About this specific theme: - clear development of the idea of a risk landscape - relationship between volcanic activity and landscape tectonics - relationship between volcanic risk and activity and landscape construction

Content

Students attending Advanced Studio will work on volcanic risk in the broadest sense, applied to one of the areas in which a large population is exposed to a very high risk linked to volcanic activity - the Vesuvius volcanic system in Naples (Italy) and the Campi Flegrei, the area at the foot of Vesuvius. The aim of the research is to investigate the risk and make a concrete assessment of the risk levels (using the information available on site and the collaboration of specialists and scholars of the phenomenon and risk assessment) and to observe how the populations have reacted to this risk over time, implementing concrete actions to transform the landscape and constructing the formulations of a lifestyle that allows the proximity of risk and its digestion from daily living habits. In terms of design, the aim is that, following a concrete assessment of the risk and its origins, work will be carried out on the development of a landscape project that reduces the risk or makes it possible to make people safe in the event of an aggravation of the risk. The work will be carried out in an analysis phase, a design phase and a project development phase.
