Seminar in Empiric Bioethics Research Methods I

Abstract

This course trains the participants in designing and conducting observational and experimental empiric research. It covers developing research questions, literature reviews, methodologies, ethics approval, and conducting research. Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methodologies are learned. The course includes readings, videos, exercises and 2-4 presentations in a flipped classroom model.

Objective

After completing this course, students will be able to: * Understand how research projects are developed and implemented, including the process of data analysis and written/verbal study presentation. *Formulate research ideas and developing hypotheses, using qualitative or quantitative research methods appropriately. *Apply the theory behind research development, study design and data analysis, and institutional/ethical issues to design and execute their research protocol. *Become familiar with the tools to complete various research methods *Develop plans to carry out and oversee a research project.

Content

In general the course will consist of a combination of high-level research design discussions, combining didactic content about research methods with application to ones’ own current masters or doctoral dissertation in order to move the project forward (ideally before the doctoral colloquium). This seminar I will be a basic course that provides all Bioethics trainees with a general basis for research methodology in this field.
