Abstract

In the physical chemistry section of the General Chemistry lab course, students conduct three experiments in the field of chemical thermodynamics. In addition to precise and careful laboratory work, the focus is on the theory and, in particular, the statistical analysis of their own measurement data. A report in the style of a scientific publication is required for each experiment.

Objective

The main educational objectives of this lab section focus on the precise execution of quantitative experiments in physical chemistry, the evaluation and presentation of measurement data, and the accurate reporting of results. Python is supported as the programming language for data analysis. Detailed written reports are required for all experiments, including a professional summary and discussion of the experimental work and its results.

Content

The course begins with the lecture "Evaluation of Measurement Data" and the corresponding exercises, which are already solved using Python. The following four experiments are offered: 1) Calorimetry 2) Vapor Pressure 3) Conductivity 4) Solubility Students complete three of these experiments. Additionally, there is a weekly lab seminar (e.g., on writing lab reports) and an introduction to physico-chemical databases provided by the Information Center.
