Abstract

With Corinne Diserens, we look at how in curating art, one concern is to deal with how to be hospitable to the vitality of artistic life and conducive to fostering a widened intelligibility of the artistic stakes that the present of art inherits. An exhibition is a medium, a conceptual map, the constellating of artistic processes, artworks, archives and intensities by accumulation or elimination.

Objective

The seminar will analyse and discuss how curating may refer to a “space” from which we can address questions related to common memory (as a question of the future), situated socio-cultural context, and narrative construction. It will give tools to the students for investigating how the exhibition invents various modi operandi to deal with the transmission of artistic heritage, the power of display, the amplification of reception of ideas and artistic gestures, in relation to constantly evolving facts and forms seeking emancipation from the dominant narratives.

Content

The seminar will explore various case studies of exhibitions in contemporary art from the 1960s to today, in museal institutions as well as in alternative spaces. The divisions that used to strictly separate visual arts, theater, choreography, music, literature, new media, architecture and design, have given way not only to interdisciplinarity but also to a burgeoning of art projects capable of conceiving novel dynamics and uncommon modes of address destined to all those who are receptive to them, and to relaying and potentiating this plural artistic power.
