Seminar Week Autumn Semester 2025
Last Updated: 2026-06-01 11:31:17
Abstract
‘Littoral’ not only stands for the transition between land and water - it also symbolizes our constantly evolving relationship with the source of all life.
Objective
The main objective of the seminar is to explore and understand the connection between Zurich's identity and its waters. This involves a continuous transition between territorial relationships and local actions, between landscape architecture and the experience of space. The elements that constitute the landscape - such as topography, water, and vegetation - are systems in themselves, interacting and influencing one another. Due to their dynamic nature, landscapes evolve in both scale and character over time. The act of "reading" the landscape - its spatial elements, the processes behind them, and the forces that shape them - will be guided throughout the week by water, which flows through the seminar as a unifying thread, connecting visible forms and hidden dynamics.
Content
The shape and character of the city of Zurich are intimately connected to water in all its forms - from the powerful forces of ancient glaciers to the presence of mythical creatures in its fountains. Through walking and drawing, we embark on a journey that reveals both the visible and invisible dimensions of Zurich’s littoral, uncovering the stories and systems shaped by water. The seminar week will take place in Zurich and offer a rich program of activities. Each morning, we will delve into the day’s specific theme, guided by experts who will lead us through various perspectives. From descending the Uetliberg to exploring the shores of the Limmat, we will engage with the many facets of the littoral landscape. Throughout the day, drawing will accompany us on our journey - an act of observation, reflection, and interpretation - culminating in a discussion of the day’s findings and insights.
