Looking into the Folds
Regarder dans les Plis
Last Updated: 2026-06-01 11:31:13
Abstract
Our starting point is a simple question: what is it to look at an image? How do we look at it? We'll take up the challenge of constructing our entire approach around a single object, apparently very modest - and very well-known - but with an unsuspected richness: Vermeer's small painting The Lacemaker.
Objective
In this experience of looking at a masterpiece of Dutch painting, we will also discover the possible challenges of representing the feminine in the West.
Content
Our starting point is a simple question: what is it to look at an image? How do we look at it? We'll take up the challenge of constructing our entire approach around a single object, apparently very modest - and very well-known - but with an unsuspected richness: Vermeer's small painting The Lacemaker (in the Louvre, Paris). In order to do this, we'll need to question and share our own experience of the gaze, as well as seek out the historical, philosophical and even poetic tools capable of problematizing this experience, which will lead us to reread some important texts by Stéphane Mallarmé, Marcel Proust, Walter Benjamin, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Gilles Deleuze. In this experience of looking at a masterpiece of Dutch painting, we will also discover the possible challenges of representing the feminine in the West.
