Ethics of Nature

Abstract
What do we owe nature or the natural environment? Preserving nature is essential for our continued existence and well-being as human beings. But other species and landscapes are also worth preserving for their own sake. If that is true, what sacrifices can be morally required of us for the sake of nature, and how can these sacrifices be justly distributed among different social groups?
Objective
This course explores historical and contemporary approaches to environmental ethics through key philosophical texts. In addition to the usual canon, we will engage with perspectives from Indian, Indigenous, and feminist knowledge traditions. We will practice philosophical debate and argumentation.
Content
This seminar explores our moral obligations to the natural environment, examining how human construction practices and technological advancements can align with ecological sustainability, or whether they inherently lead to destruction. It considers whether nature should be preserved solely for human benefit or valued for its own sake, and how this might impact the sacrifices expected of humanity. Attention will also be given to questions of justice in distributing these sacrifices, drawing insights from diverse cultural perspectives, such as Indian and Indigenous knowledge traditions, as well as feminist approaches. Discussions will be grounded in both classical and contemporary philosophical texts in environmental ethics.
