Last Updated: 2026-06-01 11:31:30

Abstract

The course provides theoretical and practical foundations in space systems engineering. Students design a space mission in teams, in collaboration with an industrial or governmental partner. The project includes key reviews, a final report, and concludes with the construction and launch of a small science mission.

Objective

Upon completion, students will: 1. Understand the historical and operational context of space exploration and the roles of key space agencies. 2. Define mission requirements and apply project management in scientific and commercial contexts. 3. Apply systems engineering from concept to verification in space system design. 4. Demonstrate knowledge of orbital dynamics, mission geometry, and the space environment. 5. Design and optimise spacecraft systems using simulations and engineering tools. 6. Select appropriate launch vehicles and understand mission and launch operations.

Content

Core course 1 in Space Systems Engineering provides essential foundational knowledge for the design and management of space missions. The course explores the historical, technological, and operational aspects of space exploration, beginning with key milestones that have shaped current practices. Students examine various mission types and gain insight into the roles and functions of major international space agencies, preparing them for careers in the global space sector. The course is project-based and includes lectures, exercises and labs, homework as well as a final Christmas project.
