Abstract

This short course is designed to help junior researchers in Materials Science develop the skills needed to write their first research articles.

Objective

Writing for Publication in Materials Science is a short course (5 x 4-lesson workshops) designed to help junior researchers develop the skills needed to write their first research articles. The course will help participants to better: - identify target readerships and communicate with that audience more effectively - structure texts appropriately from the introduction through to the end - produce logical flow in sentences and paragraphs, also with efficient use of AI tools - edit their texts and those of other participants - revise texts in response to reviewers' comments Participants are advised to take this course once they have enough research to begin writing so as to be able to get feedback on work in progress. They will be expected to produce a number of short texts as homework assignments and will receive individual feedback from the instructor and peer feedback on these during the course. Wherever feasible, elements of participants' future research articles can be developed for these assignments, so it is likely to be particularly useful for those who have material to work with and are about to begin the writing process.

Content

Part 1 provides an introduction to the course, and will then focus on using model texts, improving vocabulary and phrasing, and constructing reader-friendly sentences. Part 2 focuses on structural decisions about research articles in different journals, reviews the basics of paragraph structure and organization, and examines how to create better flow in a text. Part 3 focuses on creating successful introductions, integrating the literature, and writing abstracts. Part 4 addresses the main content and grammar concerns of writing about methods and results and reviews key grammar concepts for writing complex sentences. Part 5 looks at how to construct discussion and conclusion sections and how to strike the right tone of caution/confidence. Final topics include the editing process, preparing articles for submission, and responding to reviewers' comments. All sessions will involve group work and peer review of participants' writing.
