Abstract

Basic knowledge of enzymology, in particular the structure, kinetics and chemistry of enzyme-catalysed reaction in vitro and in vivo. Biochemistry of metabolism: Those completing the course are able to describe and understand fundamental cellular metabolic processes.

Objective

Students are able to describe the structure of proteins/enzymes and are able to explain biochemical functions depending on their 3D structures. Students are able to assess and propose hypothesis how proteins change during evolution. Connections between several metabolic pathways are known and students can evaluate how one pathway is influence by the activity of another pathway

Content

Program Introduction, basics, composition of cells, biochemical units, repetition of relevant organic chemistry Structure and function of proteins Enzymes and enzyme kinetics Catalytic strategies Metabolism: Basic concepts and design. Repetition of basic thermodynamics Glycolysis, fermentation The citric acid cycle Oxidative phosphorylation and ATP physiology
