Identification Course Freshwater Algae and Aquatic Microinvertebrates

Bestimmungskurs Süsswasseralgen und aquatische Mikroinvertebraten

Lecturers & Examiners: Prof. Dr. Jukka Jokela
The maximal participating number of students is 12 from D-USYS and 16 from D-BIOL. In case of too many students, those that simultaneously participate in the courses "701-1437-00 Aquatic Ecology I", "701-1437-03 Aquatic Ecology II" and "701-1437-02 Bestimmungskurs Süsswasseralgen und aquatische Mikroinvertebraten" are given priority. Registration is open until 10.08.2025, any remaining spots will be allocated afterwards depending on demand. Students registrating later can not be guaranteed a spot in the course.

Abstract

The course teaches the basics of diversity, identification, and ecological significance of aquatic microinvertebrates and freshwater algae in Switzerland. Participants will practice identifying the most common representatives based on distinctive characteristics and the use of identification keys. In an identification exercise, participants will also analyze samples they have collected themselves.

Objective

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. Name and taxonomically classify common microinvertebrates and freshwater algae found in Switzerland. 2. Identify and describe the distinguishing features of typical taxa under the microscope. 3. Independently use appropriate identification keys. 4. Apply sampling methods for microorganisms in freshwater. 5. Apply the theoretical knowledge they have learned to samples they have collected themselves.

Content

Theory and laboratory exercises: • Introduction to the diversity of microinvertebrates and freshwater algae • Characteristics and systematic classification of typical taxa • Practical exercises in microscopic identification • Use of identification aids Identification exercise: • Application of what has been learned to samples collected by the participants themselves • Date: Thursday, October 16, 2025, 1–5 p.m. Language: The course will be held in German (presentation slides can be provided in English and translation of the most important things during the course is possible).
