Abstract
The seminar serves as an introduction into the history of Swiss monument preservation and its most important institutions. The preservation of monuments is discussed in relation to historical and social developments in Switzerland.
Objective
Students learn about the most important institutions of monument preservation in Switzerland and their historical development. They also gain insight into the practice and theory of Swiss monument preservation. They will learn about working methods of selected institutions as well as about the assessment of the different monument categories.
Content
A monument can be a work of architecture, sculpture, or culture (in the broadest sense) as well as a place of remembrance. Even natural landscapes can become monuments. The protective premises of such representatives of the past to be preserved for future generations are laid down in the charters recognized by the international community. The Venice Charter (1964) in particular is regarded as the central declaration of principles on values and procedures for the conservation and restoration of monuments. In Switzerland, various institutions are entrusted with the task of monument preservation. One of the earliest was the Heimatschutz, founded in Bern in 1905. The Federal Commission for Monument Preservation (EKD), founded ten years later, advises the federal government as an extra-parliamentary commission on monument preservation and archaeology. The seminar serves as an introduction into the history of Swiss monument preservation and its most important institutions. The preservation of monuments is discussed in relation to historical and social developments in Switzerland. The course also introduces theoretical principles, such as integrity and authenticity or the value of memory and testimony, which are of great importance for the assessment of the different categories of monuments. Particularly significant examples will be discussed with regard to monument value, inventory, protection, etc. The seminar includes group discussions as well as presentations by the lecturers and guests.
