Lab Course Organic Chemistry (for Students of Biology and Pharmaceutical Sciences)
Praktikum Organische Chemie (für Biol./Pharm.Wiss.)
Last Updated: 2026-06-01 11:30:41
Abstract
1. Laboratory work. a) Analytical: Basic operations for the purification of organic compounds and the separation of mixtures (recrystallization, distillation, extraction, chromatography). b) Synthetic: Four one-step syntheses.2. Theory. Introduction to IR, NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy and mass spectrometry.
Objective
Students will be able to independently apply the basic techniques for the preparation, purification, and characterization of organic compounds, carefully document the experiments, and write accurate reports. They will recall the knowledge gained in the previous year's lectures in order to correctly formulate the mechanisms of the reactions carried out. They will learn to interpret spectra of small organic molecules to elucidate or confirm their structure.
Content
Analytical part: Learning the basic operations for the purification of organic compounds and the separation of mixtures (recrystallization, distillation, extraction, chromatography). Synthetic Part: Performing four one-step syntheses from the repertoire presented in the lecture course 529-1012-00. Theoretical part: Introduction to (a) writing reports and using reference management software, (b) using an electronic lab notebook, (c) database searches (Reaxys, SciFinder) and (d) IR, NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy as well as mass spectrometry.
