Underground Construction III

Abstract

Deepen the knowledge on selected topics of underground construction as well as learning working out conceptual solutions of complex problems.

Objective

Students acquire in-depth knowledge of selected topics in underground construction. Students learn the approach to the conceptual processing of complex problems by means of selected, current case studies in small groups.

Content

Caverns: Geometry, construction methods, support. Shafts: Construction methods, support. Urban tunnelling: Boundary conditions, system choice, alignment, design. Deep geological repositories: Geotechnical aspects. Field measurements: Principles, monitoring layout, applications, interpretation. Cut and cover tunnels: Modelling and design. Risk management in underground construction. Exercising conceptual solution of complex tunnelling problems based upon discussion of current tunnel cases with demanding problems in small groups.

The completion of a case study (group work) is a compulsory element of this course. The compulsory performance element does not have to be passed on its own; it is assessed with a grade (presentation and technical report), which counts towards the overall grade for the course unit. If the performance element has already been successfully completed in a previous semester, it does not have to be repeated.The overall grade for the course is made up as follows: Case study (1/2), oral session examination (1/2). There is a 10-minute preparation time directly before the oral examination (duration 15 minutes). No aids are permitted. Paper and writing materials will be provided.
