Abstract

This course is a continuing course in number theory, focusing on analytic methods for answering questions about prime numbers.

Objective

The aim of the course is to cover topics in analytic number theory including sieve theory, the Hardy--Littlewood circle method, and the large sieve.

Content

Random models for prime numbers; sieve theory, including Selberg's sieve and applications to twin primes; the circle method; the large sieve and bilinear methods. Possibly covering Bombieri--Vinogradov and primes in arithmetic progressions, bounded gaps between primes.
