Last Updated: 2026-06-01 11:32:57
Abstract
Through a critical analysis of case studies from different regions of the world, this seminar explores the complex relationships that have shaped the built environment, psychological institutions, social control, and power dynamics (civil and military) within colonial contexts in the ninetieth and twentieth centuries.
Content
The intersections between architecture, colonialism, psychology and psychiatry have profound implications for understanding the sociopsychological dimensions and psychiatric legacies of colonial spaces and policies. Through a critical analysis of case studies from different regions of the world, this seminar explores the complex relationships that have shaped the built environment, psychological institutions, social control, and power dynamics (civil and military) within colonial contexts in the ninetieth and twentieth centuries. The seminar draws upon various fields, including architectural history, postcolonial studies, cultural studies, medical anthropology, social psychology, and critical psychiatry.
