Seminar Week FS25
Seminarwoche FS25
Last Updated: 2026-06-01 11:33:45
Abstract
Studies on building archaeology and construction history based on a historic timber bridge. After a full-day introduction to the semester's topic, on-site investigations of the bridge(s) will take place.
Objective
The seminar week offers MAS students an analytical view on historic constructions. Knowledge is gained by (i.a.) the methods of building archaeology. The original functionality of the constructions, preservation strategies and related heritage preservation issues are shown and discussed exemplarily. Accompanying archival research will be carried out. The skills and knowledge acquired are generally applicable and can also be applied to other objects.
Content
The first day will be spent on basic knowledge of the buildings studied. In the morning, there will be introductory lectures on various aspects of the topic. In the afternoon, a corresponding building will be visited in order to deepen the basics on site. The rest of the week is characterised by independent work of the group. A systematic survey of a bridge will be carried out. The aim is an exact representation of the structures discovered and how they actually work. In addition, the tutor will conduct short units on more advanced methods of surveying and building archaeology on site. The group will also study the archival sources on the building. In the end, a dossier will be created with the plans developed and a historical overview, based on the archival sources, of the studied bridge.
