Abstract
The module serves as a refresher for the emergency medicine content already covered. Building on this, relevant emergency medicine topics are dealt with and discussed in small groups. A sequence on emergency without aids and an OSCE post run round off the module.
Objective
Emergency-Refresher: -The students can identify the most common causes and recognize clinical signs of an acute respiratory problem and will be able to apply important measures to remedy an airway obstruction. - The students can identify the most common causes and recognize clinical signs of a respiratory problem and know principles as well as initial measures of therapy. - The students will learn to know different forms of shock and the basic pathophysiological distinction between them and can reproduce and apply different therapy strategies and initial measures. - The students will be able to perform BLS with AED at provider level (medical professional). - The students will be able to quantify a loss of consciousness, know common reversible causes and their initial therapy. They will know prehospital strategies for recognizing a stroke. - The students will learn the principles of spinal and extremity immobilization and be able to apply them to the patient. Emergency Sonography: - The students will be familiar with the normal findings on lung sonography and will know the most important sonographic signs of pneumothorax and recognize pleural effusion. - The students will recognize important sonographic signs of cardiac left ventricular decompensation and cardiogenic shock that complement the physical status. - The students will recognize sonographic signs and clues for the major obstructive causes of shock. - The students will recognize important complementary sonographic signs of hyper/hypovolemia to physical status. - The students will recognize sonographic signs of intraperitoneal hemorrhage as a cause of hypovolemia. The learning objectives for the theme day emergency, brush-up, pharmacology in emergency medicin, emergency without resources and OSCE exercise will follow.
Content
Emergency refresher: Students learn initial pre-hospital and clinical measures for managing acute life-threatening conditions using the ABCDE scheme. To do this, instructors train students in small groups in recognising and developing clinical awareness of emergency situations using case vignettes, as well as developing solution strategies and knowledge of materials. Emergency ultrasound: Using the topic of shock, students are given an insight into the most important emergency ultrasound applications and develop an understanding of the point-of-care application of sonography. Using simple case vignettes, the most important emergency ultrasound applications are practised in small groups, and their informative value and clinical application are explained. Item C on the emergency refresher day serves as the basis for this course. Brush-Up: Students will repeat all emergency content in self-study using a Moodle course and take a quiz. The results of the quiz serve as the basis for a repetition of emergency content in the context of 4 lessons. Pharmacology in emergency medicine: "Pharmacology in emergency medicine" serves on the one hand as a refresher for the “Pharmacology for MED” module in the second semester and on the other hand as input for the use of pharmacology in emergency medicine. The lessons are conducted in English. Emergency medicine theme day: On the emergency medicine theme day, relevant topics in emergency medicine are covered from different perspectives (e.g. ethics or psychology). After a theoretical input, students can discuss the content in small groups and apply the knowledge they have acquired. First aid without medical aids: The students will go through a series of seven emergency situations that have to be resolved without medical aids. The focus here is on the medical first aid of female patients without medical aids in a non-clinical setting. OSCE exercise: The students will pass through four OSCE posts in groups of four, with each person taking on one of the following roles: doctor, observer and timekeeper. Performance at the OSCE will be evaluated and, in addition to participation in all practical courses, will count towards the semester performance. In addition, an emergency transfer task will be solved in the group and important emergency skills will be practised again in two practical exercises.
