Abstract

The category of "Laboratory Courses, Projects, Seminars" includes courses and laboratories in various formats designed to impart practical knowledge and skills. Moreover, these classes encourage independent experimentation and design, allow for explorative learning and teach the methodology of project work.

Objective

Wireless transmission of information is ubiquitous today. Depending on application and frequency range, different types of modulation are used, with digital methods having largely replaced the old analog methods. Software Defined Radio (SDR) tools make it possible to dive into this world and "surf the waves" with relatively little effort. More powerful computers allow for increasingly complex signal processing in transmitters and receivers. At the same time, the signal processing algorithms can be adapted and changed very quickly and flexibly. In this P&S we will take a closer look at how SDR works. In the first part we will work on the basics of frequencies, spectra, modulation types, and signal processing. In the second part we will work in groups on different projects with SDR tools. Students can also bring their own ideas. At the end, the projects will be presented in the class.
