Abstract

The course addresses principles and methods of experimental social research. It focuses on design, implementation, and analytical tools needed to conduct social science experiments in the laboratory or online environments.

Objective

Upon completion of the course, participants will have learned the basics of experimental methods in the social sciences and will be able to conduct their own experiments.

Content

Students learn the basics of designing, conducting, and evaluating laboratory or online experiments. In particular, the course addresses methodological principles (validity, control), design considerations (factorial designs, matching, subjects, incentives), common measurement techniques (willingness to pay, elicitation of beliefs, risk and social preference measures, biophysical measurements), implementation and logistics (experimental software, ethics, data management, recruitment), and the analysis of experimental data.
