Applied Ethology and Animal Welfare

Abstract
The course provides basic knowledge on how to measure and analyse behaviour of captive animals, and will focus on animal welfare including its definition and assessment.
Objective
Students will - understand the basic concepts of Applied Ethology and Animal welfare - be able to critically analyse behavioural data - be trained to understand interdisciplinary research. - be able to critically assess animal welfare - be able to summarize and communicate scientific data
Content
Main topics: - How to measure behaviour - Social behaviours - Behavioural needs - Animal welfare: definitions and assessment - Welfare challenges associated with animal captivity - Positive welfare - Environmental enrichment - Low arousal behaviour (e.g. boredom) - Animal handling - Pain and distress The final grade will be based on a home assignment - leaflet (30%) and a final written exam (semester performance, 70%)
