Abstract

Group theory: groups, representation of groups, unitary and orthogonal groups, Lorentz group. Lie theory: Lie algebras and Lie groups. Representation theory: representation theory of finite groups, representations of Lie algebras and Lie groups, physical applications (eigenvalue problems with symmetry).

Objective

The students will be able to: (1) name various examples of groups (finite groups, matrix groups), determine the symmetry groups of simple geometric objects, and apply basic notions of group theory (is a group abelian, connected? Subgroups, normal subgroups, factor groups?); (2) define representations of finite groups, determine and interpret character tables, and analyze representations (irreducibility, canonical decomposition); (3) define matrix Lie groups and Lie algebras and name typical examples, and connect Lie groups and Lie algebras via the exponential map and the Campbell-Baker-Hausdorff formula; (4) analyze representations of typical Lie algebras and Lie groups, in particular SU(2) and SO(3); decompose tensor products of representations of SU(2) and su(2) into irreducible components (Clebsch-Gordan).
