Abstract
This course teaches basic concepts in microbiology from a practical perspective. Through a combination of lectures and hands-on experimental work in the laboratory, it showcases applications of microbiology in the environmental sciences.
Objective
The course is designed to equip students with practical knowledge and hands-on experimental skills in key methods and technologies of microbiology, including: - handling and cultivating bacteria - imaging bacteria by microscopy - counting bacteria by plating and qPCR - analysing antibiotic resistances - analysing decontamination procedures - identifying and metabolically profiling bacteria - identifying bacteria by 16S sequencing - cloning using modern molecular biology methods - genetically modifying bacteria for biotechnological applications
