Abstract

This course offers participants the opportunity to read, and reflect in class on, challenging texts on societal issues that regularly appear on the French-language news agenda, in order to expand their cultural knowledge, and specifically, to improve their lexical skills in writing and speaking, as well as express complex personal opinions when speaking.

Objective

The main objective of this course is to develop participants’ written comprehension and expression and, more specifically, to explore the implicit and cultural aspects of a variety of text genres (academic writing, essays, investigative journalism). This course aims to improve participants' language skills through the acquisition of precise and context-specific vocabulary. It also raises their awareness of the argumentative character of written texts, words or expressions used in writing, and various types of discourse and language registers.

  • Wissenschaft im Kontext (Science in Perspective) (In Kursen aus dem Programm “Wissenschaft im Kontext” lernen Studierende, die MINT Fächer der ETH aus der Perspektive der Geistes-, Sozial- und Staatswissenschaften zu reflektieren. Nur die in diesem Abschnitt aufgelisteten Fächer können als "Wissenschaft im Kontext" angerechnet werden.)
    • Sprachkurse der UZH und der ETH Zürich (Sprachkurse können im Umfang von maximal 3 KP in der Kategorie «Wissenschaft im Kontext» während des gesamten Bachelor- und Masterstudiums angerechnet werden. Es gelten überdies folgende Einschränkungen: Im Falle der europäischen Sprachen Englisch, Französisch, Italienisch und Spanisch werden nur fortgeschrittene Sprachkurse ab Niveau B2 angerechnet. Deutsche Sprachkurse werden ab Niveau C2 angerechnet. Nur die in diesem Abschnitt aufgelisteten Sprachkurse können als "GESS Wissenschaft im Kontext" angerechnet werden.
