Last Updated: 2026-06-01 11:34:02
Abstract
In this practice-oriented capstone course, student teams work on real-world challenges in forest and landscape management. Acting as consulting offices, they integrate skills acquired during their studies and strengthen their abilities in analysis, problem solving, project management, and reporting.
Objective
The project-based learning context aims at developing and sharpening the following skills: - Analyse, streamline and structure a real-world project to identify key challenges and requirements. - apply and adapt established scientific methods to new project contexts, and derive relevant recommendations for clients. - write a concise, clear, and scientifically sound project report that is tailored to the target audience. - deliver defined project outcomes on time, and communicate professionally with clients and other relevant stakeholders.
Content
This project-based course focuses on tackling real-world questions provided by regional or cantonal stakeholders. Student groups independently analyse complex problems, structure the project workflow, and adapt established methods to a new context. They collect and analyse (geo-)spatial data and develop actionable recommendations tailored to their client’s needs. The findings are presented in a scientifically sound and clearly written final report targeted at the respective audience. The course strengthens key competencies in project planning and delivery, analytical thinking, method transfer, and professional communication with clients and other stakeholders – all within defined timeframes.
