Abstract

The category of "Laboratory Courses, Projects, Seminars" includes courses and laboratories in various formats designed to impart practical knowledge and skills. Moreover, these classes encourage independent experimentation and design, allow for explorative learning and teach the methodology of project work.

Objective

The subject of this practical course is signal detection in magnetic resonance imaging, a medical imaging procedure. The procedure is based on the magnetic resonance (MR) of atomic nuclei with frequencies in the radiofrequency range. Tuned RF coils with a preamplifier stage are used for MR detection. Such an elementary MR detector is designed, built and tested during the practical course. Successful teams can test their detector on a 7-tesla tomograph at the end of the practical and generate sectional images of a biological object (e.g. an orange or kiwi). Basic knowledge of circuit design must be applied to solve the task. Previous knowledge in the field of high-frequency engineering is advantageous

Content

This course covers signal detection in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a medical imaging technique. MRI is based on the magnetic resonance of atomic nuclei, with signal frequencies in the range of several hundred MHz. Tuned high frequency coils are used to receive these signals. The goal of this course is to build such a coil and use it to acquire cross-sectional images of fruits (e.g. orange, kiwi, ...) on a 7 Tesla MRI machine. A basic understanding of electronic circuitry is required for the course; prior knowledge of radio frequency technology is an advantage but not a prerequisite.
