Abstract

This course offers an opportunity for students to become familiar with current research topics in Cartography. The course is comprised of lectures given by national and international scientists in the field of Cartography, hands-on exercises for digital map processing methods, and projects to work on current research challenges. A particular focus will be feature extraction from historical maps.

Objective

The goal of this course is to provide an overview of Cartographic research topics as well as to equip the students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills to process digital maps. Students will learn about the fundamental programming concepts that will enable them to make use of existing image processing techniques as well as how to improve existing methods for specific map processing challenges.

Content

This course will cover the following topics: • Current research in Cartography • Digital map processing methods and challenges • Hands-on programming exercises to work with raster and vector data (incl. common software libraries for image processing) • Improvement of map processing methods (e.g., conflation, template matching, artificial intelligence)
