Abstract

The practical focuses on the flora and vegetation of the colline and montane belts in Valais. Students are offered guided field excursions to deepen their knowledge of plant species and to learn to recognise important vegetation units and their ecological characteristics.

Objective

Becoming acquainted with the flora and ecological conditions of important vegetation units of the colline and montane belts of the canton Valais. Consolidation of taxonomic and plant morphological knowledge. Gain experience in plant determination using scientific determination keys and the creation of a herbarium.

Content

This course gives an introduction to the flora and vegetation of the colline and montane belts in Valais. During three day excursions the participants will become acquainted with important vegetation types, their species diversity and the respective environmental conditions in the botanically famous area known as Follatères, between Branson and Saillon. Besides deepening the knowledge of plant species, plant families and vegetation, a focus will be laid on how man shaped (and continues to shape) the cultural landscape. Students will further learn the basic techniques to create a herbarium.
