Reflecting Communication
Reflektierende Kommunikation
Last Updated: 2026-06-01 11:33:37
Abstract
Building on the "Medical history-taking technique" module, this module is dedicated to communicating with patients. It focuses in particular on the relationship experience between physicians and patients, as well as the biopsychosocial anamnesis. The module enables students to try out communicative processes and reflect on their experiences in the student group.
Objective
Introduction - Students should be able to explain the developmental-psychological and psychodynamic foundations of doctor-patient communication. - Students should be able to describe the principle of reflective communication. Exercises - Students should be able to take a structured biopsychosocial history. - Students should be able to reflect on the experience of communication between doctor and patient and incorporate this into their assessment. - Students should be able to describe and apply various verbal and non-verbal techniques and communication styles in biopsychosocial anamnesis. - Students should be able to report on subjective feelings of countertransference that arise during the anamnesis and use them for diagnostic purposes. - Students should be able to explain the patient's subjective model of illness. - Students should be sensitized to the importance of non-technical medicine and be able to report on this. This includes an understanding of the central function of the doctor-patient relationship and of psychosomatic connections in medicine.
Content
On three consecutive mornings at the Barmelweid Clinic, the students are supported in the same groups (6-7 people each) in reflecting on communication experiences between physician and patient and discussing them in the student group. Particular attention is paid to the subjective experience in the relationship with the patient. Psychodynamic models of countertransference are e-plained and used to empathize with and grasp the patient's "self". These experiences are based on learning verbal and non-verbal techniques and communication styles for taking a biopsychosocial anamnesis. This is taught and practiced on all three days of the course. One or two patients who are being treated in the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at the Bar-melweid Clinic usually make themselves available for exercises each morning of the course. The aim of the course is also to develop the small group of students as a "resonance space". A further central learning element is the recognition of the ubiquitous importance of the doctor-patient relationship in medicine and thus the sensitization to the significance of a medicine that is not only technical. The basics of a psychosomatic understanding should also be developed, which, with a bio-medical perspective, leads to integration into a medical identity The courses are led by clinically experienced team members from the Clinic Barmelweid.
