Abstract

This course introduces health impact assessment (HIA) as a systematic process for judging how projects, programmes, plans or policies may affect population health and equity, illustrated through a range of case studies.

Objective

Students will be able to o explain the various guiding principles and steps involved in a health impact assessment in simple terms. o differentiate between the various areas of application of health impact assessment and give specific examples. o apply various tools and methods used in health impact assessment on the basis of a given case study and formulate management options to reduce possible negative effects on the health of the affected population.

Content

This course introduces the concept of health impact assessment (HIA) as a systematic process to judge the potential effects of a project, program, plan or policy on the health of a population and the distribution of those effects within the population. Theoretical content is contextualised through a series of case studies presenting different applications of HIA in various settings around the world.
