Last Updated: 2026-06-01 11:33:36

Abstract

The aim of this course is to systematically analyze learning and memory processes as a consequence of the interaction between molecular, cellular and circuit-based mechanisms. We will focus on the specific experimental (methodological) breakthroughs at each analytical level of the underlying mechanisms of learning and memory: from molecules to circuits.

Objective

The objective of the course is two-fold: firstly, to interpret the biological processes underlying learning and memory, students will develop and apply conceptual frameworks at the intersection of molecular biology and systems neuroscience. Second, they will be able to critically assess interdisciplinary experimental designs necessary to investigate experience encoding in the brain.

Content

o Introduction to synaptic plasticity: functional and structural changes modulating synaptic strength during and after learning events. o Relationship between gene expression, synaptic plasticity and memory. o Hippocampal oscillations and the “Two-stage model of memory trace formation”. o Mechanism of memory storage and retrieval within a circuit: definition, formation and manipulation of a memory engram.
